Code of Ethics

At a meeting of the Joint IADR and AADR Boards of Directors (January, 2000), it was determined that the Summary Code of Ethics prepared by the Ethics Committee should be publicized more fully. It appeared in the January/February, 2000, issue of IADReports (page 9) and is reproduced below.

I. Preamble
The purpose of this Summary Code of Ethics is to define general principles for the responsibilities of members of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) in their research and scholarly activities.

II. Rationale
IADR, as a professional research association, expects that the special expertise of the membership carries with it the obligation to serve with the utmost sincerity and integrity. The Code of Ethics is based on an honor system, and adherence to the Code of Ethics is the responsibility of each member.

III. General Principles
The following General Principles should guide members in their research and scholarly activities.
All members of the IADR should:
1)     act with honor and in accordance with the highest standards of professional integrity;
2)     be guided by the conventions of scholarly pursuit;
3)     promote exemplary ethical standards for research and scholarship;
4)     conduct work with objectivity;
5)     communicate information in a responsible manner, with due regard for the significance and credibility of the available data;
6)     present scientific or professional judgments with full disclosure of the extent of financial support;
7)     avoid judgments influenced by conflict of interest and declare interests when these may be perceived to have exerted an influence;
8)     take actions necessary to ensure the rights and interests of research subjects, and observe the spirit and letter of the laws, regulations, and ethical standards with regard to the welfare of humans and animals
involved in experimental or clinical procedures; and
9)    not engage in any form of advertising which is false, fraudulent, deceptive, or misleading.

Reference can be made to the complete IADR Code of Ethics, which can be found in the Journal of Dental Research 73(7):1290- 1294, 1994. Only the summary printed here has been formally approved by the IADR.
